Kickstart your future as a Jewish leader today

If you are currently serving a Reform congregation as a Cantorial Soloist, passionate about becoming a full-fledged Cantor, and full-time immersion in seminary life at HUC-JIR in New York is an impossibility at this time, then enrollment in the new Cantorial Certification Program at the Debbie Friedman School of Sacred Music may be the perfect fit for you.

This program is designed for those who are interested in expanding their knowledge base, broadening their spiritual horizons and refining their skills through several years of part-time coursework that will combine distance learning, face-to-face kallot, mentoring, and guided independent study. Successful completion of the program will result in Cantorial Certification from the Debbie Friedman School of Sacred Music and full membership in the American Conference of Cantors.

Utilizing faculty and resources from all four campuses of HUC-JIR, as well as a diverse group of colleagues across the country, we will strive to create a cohort of working professionals who will take part in educational opportunities equal to the level of excellence set by the DFSSM ordination program.

Certification will enable you to better serve your congregants by enhancing all aspects of your professional life, and will greatly expand your knowledge in the areas of traditional and contemporary Jewish Music, Liturgy, Synagogue Skills, Hebrew, Jewish Text, and Education. You will emerge from the program better equipped to engage and inspire others through worship, learning, and ritual observance.

You must be dedicated to a life of reflection and discovery, personal spiritual growth, the pursuit of artistic excellence, and a commitment to Judaism and the values implicit in a Jewish way of life. You will gain the tools necessary to be a cantor while having the opportunity to find your own unique connection to this profound and ancient profession.

The application procedure for Cantorial Certification is currently on hold.
