Master of Arts in Jewish Studies

A two-year residential program individually tailored to your academic interests in Jewish history.

In our two-year master’s program, gain general competence in Jewish Studies, or more specifically in:

  • Hebrew Bible and Interpretation
  • Jewish and Christian Studies in the Greco-Roman Period and Interfaith Studies
  • Rabbinic Literature
  • Jewish Thought
  • Modern Jewish History and The American Jewish Experience

Degree Requirements

The M.A. in Jewish Studies is usually completed in two years. The degree requires 45 credits of graduate-level courses or 36 credits plus a thesis (worth 9 credits). 3 courses of Hebrew language instruction (which includes 2 semesters of Biblical Hebrew) are included in that total. A minimum of 24 credits must be taken in residency. The program may be taken on a part-time basis, but all requirements for the degree must be completed within a span of 4 years.

Post-Master's

The Pines School of Graduate Studies awarded 20 MAJS degrees between 2011 and 2021. Eight of those graduates went on to do doctoral work at HUC-JIR and the University of Cincinnati, Yale University, the University of Wisconsin, and the University of Michigan; two went on to Rabbinical School at HUC-JIR; others are teaching in secondary schools or in the Jewish or Christian communities.
