Privacy Policy

Effective November 21, 2023

It is the policy of Hebrew Union College–Jewish Institute of Religion to respect the privacy of all Web site visitors to the extent permitted by law.

We will not disclose Personal Information (as defined below) to third parties for their direct marketing purposes without your consent, and SMS OPT-IN consent and data will not be shared with third parties. If, after providing consent, you want to opt-out of having your Personal Information disclosed to third parties for their direct marketing purposes, please let us know by sending us an email to webmaster@huc.edu.

Please be sure to include your full name, email address, mailing address, and specifically state that you do not want your personal information shared with third parties for their direct marketing purposes.  Additionally, you will have an opportunity to unsubscribe from receiving promotional material from HUC-JIR by clicking on an “unsubscribe” hyperlink contained in promotional emails we send you or by replying “STOP” to any text messages. Information We Collect

Personal Information 

We may collect information that personally identifies you, such as your name, zip code, e-mail, address, age, credit card and billing information, and information about your interest in and use of various content, programs and services.

This Personal Information is provided by you when you request information from us, apply for or enroll in our programs and events, or attend online courses.

The decision to provide this information is optional. However, if you choose not to provide the requested information, you may not be able to enroll in our programs or attend our events.

Personal information that you provide by e-mail or through other online means, such as a response to an inquiry or a request for information, is used only for purposes necessary to serve your requests. This may involve redirecting your inquiry or comment to another person or department better suited to meeting your needs.

Usage Data and Site Activity 

When your computer, tablet, mobile device, or any other device contacts our web servers (for example, when you visit the huc.edu or other HUC.EDU domain, we collect information in connection with the actions you take on that website.

For example, each time you use a website we collect the type of Web browser you use, your operating system, your Internet Service Provider, your IP address, the pages you view, your media access control (MAC) address, your mobile carrier, your mobile  Internet browsers, your location information, and the time and duration of your visits to the  HUC.EDU website.

This anonymous usage information may be associated with your user name and profile, but we will not disclose the associated information to third parties, except as explained in this Privacy Policy.

We may use this information to help us understand how people use the HUC.EDU website, and to enhance our services.

Cookies

We use cookies (a small text file placed on your computer to identify your computer and browser).  Most Web browsers are initially set up to accept cookies.  You can reset your Web browser to refuse all cookies or to indicate when a cookie is being sent.  However, certain features of the HUC.EDU website may not work if you delete or disable cookies.  Some of our Third-Party Providers (as defined below), may use their own cookies in connection with the services they perform on our behalf, as further explained below.

How We Use Information and When We May Share and Disclose Information

We use Personal Information for internal purposes, such as to improve the HUC.EDU website, to fulfill requests for classes or events.  We may use Usage Data for a number of purposes, such as system administration, to report aggregate information to our internal management team, or to audit the use of the HUC.EDU website.

We may associate your Usage Data with the Personal Information you provide.  We may disclose to third parties certain Usage Data regarding the HUC.EDU website.  However, in such cases, your Usage Data will be aggregated with the Usage Data of others and will not identify you individually or include your Personal Information.

Disclosure of Information 

HUC-JIR will only release personal information, when legally required, to help law enforcement investigations, legal proceedings, or internal investigations of HUC-JIR rule and regulation violations.

Third-Party Providers

We use Google Analytics to understand how people use the HUC-JIR website.  We also use AdRoll for retargeting purposes. Advertising cookies will be placed on your computer so that we can understand what you are interested in. Our display advertising partner, AdRoll, then enables us to present you with retargeting advertising on other sites based on your previous interaction with HUC.EDU. The techniques our partners employ do not collect personal information such as your name, email address, postal address, or telephone number.

Our Privacy Policy does not cover any use of information that an Advertiser may collect from you.  You can visit the Network Advertising Initiative Web site, which offers information about Internet advertising companies and how to opt out of participating members’ information collection.

Notice to California Residents/Your California Privacy Rights 

California residents are entitled once a year to request and obtain certain information regarding our disclosure, if any, of personal information to third parties for their direct marketing purposes during the immediately prior calendar year (e.g., requests made in 2014 will receive information about 2013 sharing activities).  As set forth in this Privacy Policy, we comply with this law by offering our visitors, in lieu of providing such information, the ability to tell us not to share your personally identifiable information with third parties for their direct marketing purposes.  To make such a request, consistently exercise your opt-out choice whenever you provide Personal Information to us or send us a message to webmaster@huc.edu.

Rights for Data Subjects in the European Union
If you provide information directly to HUC-JIR from a location in the European Union, you consent to the transfer of your personal information outside the European Union to the United States.

To the extent applicable, the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) grants data subjects in the European Union the right, in certain circumstances, to request access to, a copy of, rectification, restriction in the use of, or erasure of your information. Your requests pursuant to the GDPR will be subject to the retention periods of applicable federal and state law. The GDPR provides further information about your rights. You also have the right to lodge complaints with your national or regional data protection authority. Security

HUC-JIR recognizes the importance of safeguarding the confidentiality of your Personal Information. Accordingly, we employ commercially reasonable measures designed to protect your information from unauthorized access, disclosure and use.

However, no data transmission over the Internet or other network can be guaranteed to be 100% secure.  As a result, while we strive to protect information transmitted on or through the Properties, we cannot and do not guarantee the security of any information you transmit on or through the Properties, and you do so at your own risk.
