In the midst of human tragedies in the Middle East, internationally renowned photographer Chanan Getraide captures the essence of Israel and the promise of the land itself. Getraide’s series of eighteen large-scale photographs capture the immediacy of nature and reveal the many aspects of the land: parched earth, rushing rivers, high technology, biblical sheep roaming the fields, footpaths, highways, blossoming crops, and the embrace of the sea. Laura Kruger, curator, notes, “Promised Land sings of the land itself as Getraide’s images embrace the untrammeled earth as well as the necessary additions of roads, walls and oil rigs.”
Getraid’s photographs in Promised Land are featured in the book, I’ll Take You There, Landscapes and Love, Verses from the Holy Land (Cordinata Publishing House), with poems by Yoram Taharlev. Chanan Getraide lectures throughout Israel and the United States. His photography has been exhibited in one-man exhibitions in Israel, the Netherlands, Italy and the United States. He was named “Photographer of the Year” in Israel in 1998, in the category of Industrial Photography, and first prize in the Second International Competition for Nature and Landscape Photography in Israel in 2000. Getraide serves on the Board of the Professional Photographers Association of Israel. Born in 1945 on Kibbutz Kvutzat Shiller, and educated at Hadassa College in Jerusalem, he has been the photographer of his kibbutz, documenting the events and activities of his community.
