Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion President Andrew Rehfeld, Ph.D. received the honor of election to the American Association of Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) board of directors. Rehfeld, along with five other new directors, joins the global membership organization which advances the vitality and democratic purposes of higher education. AAC&U leads a range of events, programs, public advocacy efforts, and publications geared toward improving educational quality, equity, and success.

“I look forward to working with the AAC&U to advance the vital role of higher education and democratic ideals,” remarked President Rehfeld. “HUC-JIR fills a unique role in higher education, and I am honored to bring that perspective to support AAC&U’s mission.”

“It is an honor and a privilege to work with such an extraordinary group of higher education leaders,” AAC&U President Lynn Pasquerella said of the new board in a statement. “I look forward to learning from the insights and expertise of AAC&U’s new board members as we seek to achieve our shared objective of advancing the democratic purposes of higher education by promoting equity, innovation, and excellence in liberal education.”

In addition to his duties at HUC-JIR, Rehfeld currently serves as a member of the board of the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, a Jewish relief organization.

Rehfeld was elected to the board during the 2024 annual meeting of the AAC&U in January.
