New at the Klau Library in Cincinnati is our very summer-appropriate exhibit titled “The Borsht Belt: Jews on Vacation.” This exhibit highlights a unique slice of American Jewish history, when the upwardly mobile Jews began leaving in droves from their stuffy homes in New York City and its surrounding areas to spend time in the fresh air of the Catskills region. Surrounded by kosher food, “yiddishe” entertainment, and Jewish friends, this area became one of the fastest growing American tourism destinations. The exhibit tells the story of how the Catskills became a destination for East Coast Jewry, what was so appealing to vacationers, and the memories and pictures that are fondly recalled and enjoyed by those who visited during the Catskills golden age.
Exhibit items include books highlighting famous performers, unique kosher dishes, and memorabilia on loan from our Library patrons. A special thanks goes to the American Jewish Archives and Phil Brown of the Catskills Institute for their assistance in providing many of the materials on display.
Join us on August 22nd at 2pm for our exhibit reception “Taste of the Catskills.” It will be an afternoon of reminiscing about sunny and delightful summers spent in the Catskills while you enjoy the Klau Library’s exhibit and partake in some traditional Jewish Resort-era refreshments. A lively panel discussion will be led by charismatic Catskills “regulars” as they share with us their different experiences and memories in Catskills resorts and bungalow colonies.
