James Gurland currently serves as Director of Advancement in the Institutional Advancement Department at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion. His responsibilities consist of developing and maintaining key donor and alumni relationships, creating and implementing fundraising and leadership develop programs, and increasing awareness of Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion among donors, prospects, and the broader community.

Prior to his work with Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, James held positions with the American Committee for the Tel Aviv Foundation as Chief Philanthropy Officer, Kean University Foundation as Chief Development Officer, Jerusalem Foundation, Inc. as National Director and The American Committee for the Weizmann Institute of Science as Executive Director of the New Jersey Region. It is during these tenures, that James successfully closed multiple seven figure gifts.

Before joining the world of Development, James practiced Law in the State of New Jersey as a litigator primarily in Employment Law. James holds a J.D. from Seton Hall University School of Law in Newark, New Jersey, and a B.A. (History) from Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania.

James is also a lay leader as former President and current lifetime member of the Board of Governors of Daughters of Israel, a multi-faceted, state-of-the-art, skilled nursing facility offering the most modern and comprehensive services including long-term care, sub-acute rehabilitation, memory care, hospice/palliative care, respite stays and living with assistance, that provides the highest quality of care for nearly 150 residents.

Professionally, James served on the Board of the New Jersey Council of Charitable Gift Planners.

In his spare time, James is an immensely proud father of Ariel, 21, enjoys participating in and coaching CrossFit as CF-L1 CrossFit Trainer. He also enjoys traveling whenever he can as he has been to all 30 Baseball stadiums in America, forty-seven states, 36 National Parks and 46 CrossFit Boxes throughout the world.
