Rabbi David Ellenson, President of Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion (HUC-JIR) awarded Peter J. Weidhorn, Immediate Past Chairman of the Union for Reform Judaism, the Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa, in recognition of his extraordinary contributions to the Reform Movement and the Jewish people. The presentation was made on May 3 at HUC-JIR’s Graduation Ceremonies at Congregation Emanu-El in the City of New York.
Rabbi Ellenson stated, “Peter Weidhorn has given selflessly to the leadership and direction of the Union for Reform Judaism. With boundless energy and enthusiasm, he has worked with all Reform constituencies to serve the betterment of the Reform Movement. He has given generously of his wide range of talents to his community and has offered wise counsel and direction as a Governor of Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion.”
Peter Weidhorn is the immediate Past Chairman of the Union for Reform Judaism, the umbrella organization of 900 Reform congregations throughout North America, and is the former President of Temple Shaari Emeth in Manalpan, NJ. He is a Board member of The Foundation for Jewish Camp and the Board of Governors of Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion.
Weidhorn has over 40 years of experience in managing, operating, financing, and in the purchase and sale of apartment properties. He was the founder, principal investor, Chairman, President, and Director of WNY Group, Inc., a REIT that owned and operated 8500 apartment units in New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, and Pennsylvania, that was sold in 2000. He is currently the Chairman of The Community Development Trust, based in New York, which is engaged in both equity and debt transactions for the affordable housing industry. He is a former Board Member and investor in BNP Residential Properties, a publicly traded REIT prior to its sale to a private entity firm in 2007. He is a former Board Member and investor in Monmouth Investment Corporation, a publicly traded REIT.
A philanthropist, private investor, consultant, and inactive CPA, Weidhorn has served as the former Chairman of the Centra State Hospital System in Freehold, NJ; served two separate terms as President of the NJ Apartment Association; and is the former Chairman of HomeState Bank in Teaneck, NJ.
Weidhorn graduated CW Post College of Long Island University (1969) and was admitted as a CPA in New York and New Jersey (1972).
