Rabbi David Ellenson, President of Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, will award Rabbi Marc J. Belgrad with the Doctor of Divinity at Graduation Ceremonies in Cincinnati on Thursday, May 19, 2011 at 7:30 pm at Isaac M. Wise Temple (8329 Ridge Road).  Rabbi Belgrad will be honored for 25 years of scholarly distinction as an alumnus of HUC-JIR.

After his ordination from Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in 1986, Rabbi Marc J. Belgrad first served Temple Israel in Memphis, TN, and then as the senior rabbi of Congregation Beth Am in Buffalo Grove, IL, for eighteen years.  Throughout his career, his special focus on innovation in worship and providing learning opportunities for adults have created many portals for congregants searching for ways to enter into the tradition.  Additionally, Rabbi Belgrad has devoted much effort to the improvement of the community through his leadership roles in the Memphis Ministerial Association, the Chicago Association of Reform Rabbis, and the Rabbinic Advisory Committee of Olin Sang Ruby Union Institute.

More recently, Rabbi Belgrad has chosen to devote himself to more intensive work in the field of Jewish education.  He serves as a part-time faculty member at Chicagoland Jewish High School, where he instructs students of all ages in Bible, Contemporary Judaism and Jewish Thought.  Additionally, he has created a series of programs under the title “Getting to God,” which enable adults to explore their faith and spirituality in safe yet challenging environments.  He continues to enjoy pulpit life by serving as the part-time rabbi of Congregation Sholom of Galesburg, IL.  Finally, he is in the early stages of exploring the formation of a new religious community.

Rabbi Belgrad is married to Susan Glazer Belgrad, and they have two sons, Benjamin and Jonathon.
