Rabbi David Ellenson, President of Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, awarded Rabbi Karen A. Soria with the Doctor of Divinity at Graduation Ceremonies in New York on Thursday, May 5, 2011, at Congregation Emanu-El of the City of New York. Rabbi Soria was honored for 25 years of scholarly distinction as an alumna of HUC-JIR.
Rabbi Karen A. Soria currently serves as Rabbi of Temple Shalom in Winnipeg, Manitoba. She initiated and was teacher of a Jewish study group in Comox, B.C., from 2006-2007. She has served as rabbi of Olympic B'nai Shalom Havurah in Washington, Congregation Beth Shalom and Bat Yam/Temple of the Islands in Florida, and Temple Beth Israel in Melbourne, Australia.
Rabbi Soria has served as Chaplain for hospitals and military of Canadian Forces and the US Navy. She currently serves as Chaplain with the 33 Combat Engineers Regiment in Ottawa, Ontario.
In 1997 and again in 2001, Rabbi Soria received the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal. He has received numerous letters of appreciation for speeches and guest talks at events such as Women's History Month and Black History Month.
Rabbi Soria is a member of the Central Conference of American Rabbis.
