Marjorie L. Miller Inducted onto Board of Governors

Marjorie L. Miller has been inducted onto the Board of Governors of Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion (HUC-JIR) at HUC-JIR’s Cincinnati campus.  Miller has served as Chair of the Board of Overseers of HUC-JIR’s New York School since July 1, 2008. 

 

“Marjorie Miller’s love for Reform Judaism and congregational life, commitment to education, expertise in social work, and appreciation for our leadership development mission is a source of wisdom and guidance as together we advance the mission of our institution and meet the challenges of a changing Jewish world,” said Rabbi David Ellenson, HUC-JIR President.

 

Miller received the B.A. in Liberal Arts from Sarah Lawrence College (1953), the certificate in Educational Psychotherapy from the Center for Preventive Psychiatry (1972), the M.S. in Special Education from the College of New Rochelle (1975), and the M.S.W. from Columbia University School of Social Work (1986).  She is a certified by New York State as a Permanent Teacher and Social Worker.

 

She has had an extremely varied career, starting as an Early Childhood teacher at Sarah Lawrence; as a consultant at the YWCA, White Plains; providing therapeutic interventions with children at the Center for Preventive Psychiatry; training teachers in Day Care and Head Start programs; as the director of Westchester Ethical Society Nursery School; and serving as a clinical social worker and consultant at Westchester Jewish Community Services, where she provided individual, group, and family therapy, and led groups for families of divorce at Temple Beth El. 

 

Miller has been a member of the HUC-JIR New York Board of Overseers since 2003 and served as President of Westchester Reform Temple (1998-2001), where she previously held the positions on the Executive Board, Board of Trustees, Rabbinical Search Commitees, and Development and Membership Committees.  She is an Honorary Trustee of Sarah Lawrence College, where she served for many years on the Board of Trustees (1983-1991) and as President of Sarah Lawrence College Alumnae/I (1980-1983). 

 

Her civic activities have included participation in the Child Development Institute at Sarah Lawrence College; membership on the Scarsdale Non-Partisan Nominating Committee and Village Board, the Scarsdale School Parent Representative Curriculum Congress, the Parent Teacher Council, Chair of Parent Education at Quaker Ridge, and Vice President and Board member of Quaker Ridge PTA, the League of Women Voters, and the Westchester Women’s Board of Federation of Jewish Philanthropies.   She has published a short history of Quaker Ridge and District #2, and presented on “The Educational Psychotherapist Functioning as Ombudsman and Other Aspects of a Therapy Program for a Family in Stress” at the American Orthopsychiatric Association Southwest Divisional Meeting.
