The California Commission on Teacher Credentialing has asked Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion (HUC-JIR) to serve as an assessor institution for its Languages Other Than English (LOTE) programs. HUC-JIR will administer Hebrew language competency examinations for State candidates seeking a single-subject teaching credential in world languages (foreign languages), with a focus on Hebrew.
In addition to offering teaching credentials in European languages such as Spanish, French, German, Italian, and Latin, the State offers credentials in Asian languages such as Cantonese, Mandarin, Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese. It is now in the process of adding less commonly taught languages including Arabic, Armenian, Farsi, Punjabi, and Hebrew.
The role of HUC-JIR will be to assess candidates who wish to teach Hebrew and are studying for their single-subject teaching credentials in Hebrew at other institutions. Spoken Hebrew, as well as Hebrew reading and writing will be evaluated for the State.
HUC-JIR already offers a multiple-subject credential through its highly regarded DeLeT teacher education program, a 13-month program that prepares well qualified candidates to teach in Jewish day schools.
