Debbie Friedman School of Sacred Music Alumni Attend ACC Conference: June 28-July 2, 2015

Monday, July 13, 2015

The Debbie Friedman School of Sacred Music Alumni Association looks for many ways to connect with our alumni and are excited when it can be in person, as it was this year at the American Conference of Cantors (ACC) Convention in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. 106 of us were together with our cantorial colleagues in the ACC and members of the Guild of Temple Musicians for 4 days of praying and learning, socializing and fun. We met with all difference classes and used this as an opportunity to learn from and with them. Cantor Richard Cohn commented that “Our alumni will play a vital role in the evolution of the cantorial program. The reflections shared by alumni at the Ft. Lauderdale convention are already influencing my approach to next steps at the DFSSM.”

In addition to individual class meetings HUC-JIR hosted over 65 alumni on the afternoon of July 1. The session was a wonderful opportunity to speak with Cantor Steven Weiss '96, Vice-President of the ACC, who spoke of planning cooperative projects in the area of continuing education with the ACC; memorialize our three departed alumni from this past year, our teacher Cantor Lawrence Avery, and our colleagues Cantor Kerry Ben-David and Cantor Jenny Izenstark; say goodbye to Cantor Bruce Ruben, who led the DFSSM for nine years; welcome the new director, Cantor Richard Cohn; and host focus group style discussions with the alumni.

Thank you to all alumni who participated. The DFSSM alumni association always wants to hear from you!

With our warmest wishes for a restful summer,
Cantor Elizabeth Sacks, DFSSM Alumni Association Chair
Cantor Mandi Beckenstein, Coordinator for Alumni Engagement for the DFSSM,
