On February 9, Rabbi David Ellenson, Ph.D., Chancellor, Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion (HUC-JIR), and Sue Neuman Hochberg, Chair, HUC-JIR Western Region Board of Overseers, were given a joyful musical tribute at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Los Angeles.
Over 650 people came to celebrate Dr. Ellenson’s four-decade career as beloved teacher and President of the College-Institute and to honor Hochberg’s inspiring leadership with HUC-JIR and the Los Angeles Jewish community.
The evening’s theme, “Music of the Night,” was hosted by Rabbi Michael Marmur, Ph.D., Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Provost, with tributes by Rabbi Lewis Barth, Professor Emeritus; Rabbi Uri Herscher, founding president and chief executive officer of the Skirball Cultural Center; Rabbi Aaron D. Panken, Ph.D., President; and Joshua Holo, Ph.D., Dean, Jack H. Skirball Campus, Los Angeles, HUC-JIR.
Cantor Evan Kent, cantor emeritus, Temple Isaiah and HUC-JIR retired faculty, designed and orchestrated the musical tribute featuring the cantorial graduates of the Debbie Friedman School of Sacred Music and an international cast of cantors, students and rabbis. Wit and passion ruled the program - from a humorous HUC-JIR “fight song” to heartfelt Broadway shows tunes lovingly sung by the many talented musicians of our community. It was a night to remember.
We are grateful to everyone who gave of his or her time and talent to make this a heartfelt tribute to Rabbi David Ellenson’s and Sue Neuman Hochberg’s inspiring leadership.
