Opening New Doors for DeLeT Alumni: Master of Arts in Teaching

DeLet Logo The HUC School of Education announces the creation of a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program, designed specifically for DeLeT alumni. This two semester MAT offers continued professional learning for classroom teachers wishing to strengthen their skills and craft. The coursework will focus on big questions and dilemmas of teaching through individual action research projects, cohort-based reflective practice workshops, and personalized mentoring. Designed for working professionals, the MAT is a part-time program with remote learning options and will welcome the first cohort in the fall of 2021.

“We are thrilled to launch the DeLeT MAT,” shared Dr. Lauren Applebaum, DeLeT director. “This program will offer new opportunities for our alumni to grow as teachers while strengthening the network of shared reflection and support that has been a hallmark of DeLeT for two decades.”

The MAT will join the DeLeT Induction program as an additional option for DeLeT alumni to gain support in their early years in the field. The induction program, led by Dr. Bonnie Sharfman in partnership with the Jewish New Teacher Project, allows alumni who have completed their preliminary CA state teaching credential to earn a permanent “clear” credential.  MAT candidates who are eligible will be able to complete induction as part of their year of study.

Making use of cutting-edge practices in teacher development to provide challenge, support and an intimate cohort experience, the DeLeT MAT will offer alumni a chance to “come home” to DeLeT while growing in their practice. Laura Lauder, original champion of DeLeT and ongoing supporter of DeLeT alumni programming, is providing generous support for the MAT. “We are grateful to Laura Lauder for her abiding belief in rigorous professional learning to enrich the impact of DeLeT alumni as they grow their careers,” stated Dr. Miriam Heller Stern, National Director of the School of Education. The program will accept the DeLeT graduate credits toward the MAT degree and build upon the vocabulary and toolkit of DeLeT. DeLeT alumni are warmly encouraged to apply for admission.
