On View: September 13, 2001-January 4, 2002
Susan Malloy: Seasons, an exhibition of paintings and drawings inspired by the seasonal aspects of nature, will be on view at the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion Museum from September 13, 2001-January 4, 2002. Inspired by nature, the works in this exhibition express spiritual ideas derived from Biblical themes.
Susan Malloy is a life-long painter whose works distill a sense of place, the essence of the seasons. The elements of the form and pattern are the aspects of the landscape that give a universal and spiritual resonance to her work, not the depiction of a particular place but the interpretation of it. Malloy is adept in all media, from the lush color palette of her oil paintings to the graphic solidity of her black and white lithographic crayon drawings. With clarity and vision, Malloy gives us a glimpse of God's world of nature and some of the material world of man.
Laura Kruger, Curator of the HUC-JIR Museum, noted: "Malloy responds to her Jewish heritage by interpreting the sacred texts, psalms, and midrashim through a keen visual perspective. Her strong line and clear delineation of nature enable the viewer to share Malloy's joy of the natural environment."
Malloy was born in New York, and received a B.S. degree in art from Skidmore College. She attended the Arts Students League and the Positano Art Workshop in Italy. She currently lives in Westport, Connecticut where she has her studio, and is active in the Westport Arts Center.
Her solo exhibitions include, among many others, shows at the Westport Arts Center at The Nature Center in Westport, CT, Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, NY, and Harvard University Divinity School in Cambridge, MA. Her work has also been featured in numerous group exhibitions, including the McMannus Room Library Collection, Westport Schools Permanent Art Collection Show in Westport, CT, and the Stamford Art Association in Stamford, CT.
