The Diverse Talents of Eduard Birnbaum

One of the pleasures of cataloging manuscripts is the rare moment that you find something completely unexpected. Such surprises can give some insight into the character of the writer or scribe that one would never find in an edited and published volume.

Today we would like to draw your attention to this page found in the Eduard Birnbaum Collection, a treasure trove of European Jewish music manuscripts. In this case, this page was found in the middle of a transcription by Birnbaum, copied from a manuscript by Johannes Clajus that Birnbaum had found in the Königsberg Royal Library. One can speculate that while Birnbaum sat transcribing the manuscript, his mind wandered and then, he doodled…

To explore this manuscript and more, visit music.huc.edu, the online home of our music manuscript collections. Manuscripts are being uploaded to this site on a regular basis.
