Mentoring Programs

Chaver Connection, Temple Ernanu-El, Dallas, Texas

Description: Members of our Temple community are trained to help those in the process of choosing Judaism to make connections within the congregation. We call these congregants "Chaverim" and they will continue their support after conversion has taken place' and through approximately the first year of transition. At different points throughout the year they contact their people to see how they are doing, to encourage them to become involved in the congregation and to offer companionship for worship, study and mitzvah projects. Chaverim are a resource for temple culture.

Conversion Mentoring Handbook, Arlene Chernow, UAHC (URJ)

The Conversion Mentor Program was established to offer individuals in the process of conversion and those who have converted to Judaism an additional source of personal support. The support will be provided by a trained group of mentors.Conversion mentors will give Jews-by-choice a non-threatening peer to turn to for conversation and information, someone who understands the process of becoming a Jew.

The program planners are aware that each relationship between a mentor and a Jew-by-choice wiii differ based on individual needs and personalities. This manual was written to assist the rabbis, mentors and Jews-by-choice by clarifying the role of the conversion mentor, suggesting flexible models for the relationship, anticipating questions, and by providing resources and suggestions for the mentor and Jew-by choice.

How To implement an Outreach Mentoring Program in a Small Congregation Temple Beth-El Las Cruces, NM

Program Goals:

  • To train designated Outreach Mentors to follow-up on practical conversion/community integration issues
  • To sensitize Temple members to become more welcoming to newcomers who are potential Temple members
  • To make potential Temple members more comfortable with the Jewish community, more familiar with our local and regional customs and ceremonies as well as more aware of practical Jewish resources.
Description: "Above and Beyond New Beginnings" consists of (a) field trips to Jewish resources in the greater Phoenix area, and (b) workshops focused on building Jewish identity for those going through conversion or new Jews-by-choice. These field trips and workshops are an optional add-on to "New Beginnings" groups for those who are converting as well as for Jews-by-choice.
