I Sing it Fluently: Ladino Activism with Sarah Aroeste
In this episode, Sarah Bunin Benor interviews Sarah Aroeste in front of a live audience about her journey in exploring her Sephardic heritage through language and travel. They discuss Sarah Aroeste’s efforts to engage people of all ages to learn more about Sephardic Jewry through her career in writing and singing Ladino songs and writing multilingual, Sephardic-themed children’s books that encourage the usage of heritage words.
Inspired by her family’s roots in North Macedonia and Greece, Sarah Aroeste is determined to bring Sephardic culture to new generations. Since 2001, Aroeste has recorded 9 albums and tours the globe presenting traditional and original Ladino songs with her unique blend of Balkan sounds, pop, and jazz. Sarah also co-directs with chef Susan Barocas, Savor: A Sephardic Music & Food Experience, which unites Sephardic song and cuisine in multi-sensory platforms.
