Anat Hoffman, Executive Director of the Israel Religious Action Center since 2002, received the Doctor of Humane Letters honorary degree at the 2022 Ordination and Academic Convocation at HUC-JIR in Jerusalem. Read her remarks in English and Hebrew below.
Seven years ago I visited the Galapagos Islands in Ecuador. I saved up for 15 years so that I could spend 11 days sailing in the tracks of Charles Darwin. Every morning we read passages from his journal in which he described exactly where he went, what he saw, how he climbed the mountains, and even his daily diet. Then we did exactly the same, following precisely in his footsteps. He saw everything, observing the tiniest details of geological, biological, and zoological phenomena. He smelled, tasted, felt, touched, and documented it all. His astonishment at what he saw is evident in every word he wrote. He tried to understand how such rich natural diversity developed. Why are the finches on Española Island different from those on Isabela Island? After realizing that the differences were connected to the particular vegetation the birds ate on each island, Darwin began to develop his theory of evolution – the driving force behind biodiversity thanks to the ability to replicate life imprecisely. Completely random mutations create new versions of the original; some of the new versions are better than the original and more equipped to survive natural selection.
Today we are marking the transmission of the Reform DNA to each of you. Rabbinical hand were placed on you, and we could literally see the rabbinical charge passing over to you.
My wish for you is that you replicate imprecisely! Our movement will only survive if you change and make change. Rabbis are performing functions today that no one could have imagined in the past. Some rabbis serve in virtual communities, and in the future we will see rabbis in the metaverse. Rabbis have become experts in running Zoom gatherings, and they produce podcasts and clips that are uploaded as part of their fundraising efforts. The position of the rabbi has become more flexible than ever and new versions are emerging. What I learned in the Galapagos Islands is that it isn’t the strong who survives, nor the most beautiful or the smartest. The one who manages to adapt to a changing environment wins the ultimate prize in the battle for survival. The one who can draw away from the main branch and grow in a different direction survives. Such splits and branching off can strengthen the whole organism, just as the splendid and enormous roots of the fig family can change their surroundings – dismantling a wall, lifting up a sidewalk, or penetrating the municipal water pipes.
So don’t hesitate to make your voices heard. In our business there’s no room for fear. You have a great message to bring to Israeli society.
Unfortunately, Israelis will pay any price and travel any distance just in order not to be “freiers” – not to be “suckers,” not to let anyone else “get the better of them.” Israelis who come to the Reform Movement already pay for religious services as part of their taxes, and then pay again to our communities for services that meet their own needs and styles. They pay twice, and that’s the classic definition of the “freier.” We have a subversive and provocative message for Israeli society: be willing to be “freiers” for the sake of others, and be proud of it! The essence of our existence lies in nonprofit activities, and as such we are the flagship of the sucker movement! We should praise anyone who is willing to act for others, to extend a helping hand, to ignore their ego, to give time and money for the greater good, to speak out for those whose voices are silenced, and to sweat and strive to repair society. These are the people we “build a wall” with and with whom we can also build a bridge: “One is so near to another that no air can come between them. They are joined one to another; they stick together and cannot be separated” (Job 41:8-9).
It has been a privilege to lead IRAC over the past few decades. I have been fortunate to be part of an enthusiastic community committed to tikkun olam. I have known moments of fellowship and partnership, and learned that when we struggle together to meet real needs of real people, we can never go wrong. Even when we don’t win, nothing can compare to the sense of purpose that comes with a just struggle against discrimination, exclusion, or oppression.
This is also an opportunity to thank the Reform Movement, which has emblazoned Tikkun Olam on its flag. It’s no small achievement that Reform Jews in Israel have established a complex, precious, and proactive body that seeks to challenge the movement itself, Israeli society, and the Jewish world. Well done!
I am grateful to Rabbi Uri Regev, who founded the Israel Religious Action Center and headed the center for 15 years. A big hug too all the staff of IRAC, now and in the past. Together we have built a fighting community that has brought real changes to the lives of millions of Israelis. We have played a central role in helping immigrants and stood by widows who faced expulsion from Israel after their husband died before they could receive Israeli citizenship. We have saved children born in Israel from expulsion to Nepal, Liberia, and the Philippines. We have stood alongside Reform and Conservative Jews in the Interior Ministry offices as they received an Israeli ID card. Together we put a stop to the exclusion of women on buses. We taught El-Al that it must pay for discriminating against women (NIS 65,000). We have prevented racists from standing in the Knesset elections and we established the first help center for victims of racism in Israel. We worked hard to ensure that women can give eulogies in cemeteries and stand alongside men without barriers.
We have appeared in court 60 times a year – more than once a week.
Together we have managed to put into practice the values of equality, pluralism, and tolerance, and to help weakened and disadvantaged groups: Olim and migrants, refugees, Christians, Muslims, Bedouins – and, of course, Reform and Conservative Jews in Israel.
We secured the Miri Gold precedent, which now ensures that we receive state funding for the salaries of the graduates of this honorable institution. Under the leadership of Attorney Orly Erez-Likhovski, IRAC still has a lot of work to do in order to secure resources for our rabbinical leadership.

לפני 7 שנים נסעתי לאיי גלפאגוס באקוודור. חסכתי 15 שנים כדי לשהות 11 יום בהפלגה בעקבות צ’ארלס דרווין. בכל בוקר באוניה קראנו קטעים מיומנו הוא פירט בדיוק לאן הלך, מה ראה, כיצד טיפס ואפילו מה אכל בכל יום ואז אנחנו עשינו בדיוק את אותו הדבר, ממש בעקבותיו. הוא ראה הכל ,הבחין בפרטי פרטים של תופעות גיאולוגיות, ביולוגיות וזואולוגיות, הוא הריח, טעם, מולל, נגע ותיעד. התפעלותו ממראה עיניו ניכרת בכל מילה שכתב. הוא חתר לגלות כיצד נוצר מגוון כה עשיר בטבע. מדוע ציפורי שיר זעירות (פינקים) באי אספניולה שונים מפינקים שחיים באי איזבלה? כשהבחין שההבדלים בין הציפורים מקורם בצמחיה שממנה הן ניזונות התגבשה אצלו תיאורית האבולוציה, מנוע שיוצר מגוון באמצעות היכולת להשתכפל בצורה לא מדויקת. מוטציות שנוצרות לגמרי באקראי הן גרסאות חדשות של המקור, חלקן טובות ממנו ומצליחות לשרוד בהצלחה גדולה יותר את תהליכי הברירה הטבעית.
היום אנו מציינים העברת ה-DNA הרפורמי ולכל אחת ואחד מכם. סמכו עליכם ידיים רבניות, ממש ראינו איך המטען הרבני הועבר אליכם.
אני מבקשת לאחל לכם להשתכפל בצורה לא מדויקת. עתידה של תנועתנו תלוי בכך שתשתנו ותשנו. רבות ורבנים ממלאים עכשיו תפקידים שלא חשבו עליהם מעולם. ישנם רבנים שמכהנים בקהילות וירטואליות ועוד תהיינה רבות ביקום מקביל (metaverse). רבנים מתפעלים תוכנת זום במיומנות, רבות מפיקות תשדירים וסרטונים כדי להעלותם לרשת ולגייס משאבים. תפקיד הרב אלסטי מתמיד וממתין ליצירתן של גרסאות חדשות. מה שלמדתי בגלפאגוס זה שלא החזק שורד, לא מי שהכי יפה שורד ולא מי שהכי חכם שורד כי אם מי שמצליח להסתגל לסביבה משתנה הוא המנצח בתחרות ההישרדות האולטימטיבית. מי שבידו להתפצל מן הענף המרכזי ולצמוח בכיוון חדש – הוא השורד. יש בכוחן של התפצלויות והסתעפויות לחזק את האורגניזם, כמו מערכת השורשים הענקית המפוארת של עץ הפיקוס שמסוגלת לשנות את כל הסביבה (לפרק קיר, להרים מדרכה, לחדור אל מערכת צינורות המים העירונית).
אז אל תהססו להשמיע את הקול שלכם. בביזנס שלנו אסור לפחד. יש לכם בשורה גדולה לחברה הישראלית.
לאסוננו ישראלים מוכנים לשלם כל מחיר וללכת כל מרחק ובתנאי שלא לצאת פראיירים מול ישראלים אחרים. ישראלים שמגיעים אלינו משלמים מיסים למדינה ובכך מממנים שירותי דת שאינם צורכים ובמקביל משלמים דמי חבר בקהילותינו עבור שירותי דת המתאימים להם. הם
משלמים פעמיים, מי שמשלם פעמיים עבור אותו שירות הוא פראייר קלאסי. אנו הרפורמים מציעים לחברה הישראלית מסר חתרני ומתריס – תהיו פראיירים למען הזולת ותהיו גאים בזה. ליבת הקיום שלנו היא פעילויות ללא מטרת רווח – לכן אנו המגדלור של הפראיירים. עלינו לציין ולשבח את כל מי שמוכנה לעשות למען אחרים, להושיט יד לזולת, למחול על כבודה, לתרום מזמנו וכספו למען הכלל, להשמיע קול צודק בשמם של מושתקים, להזיע ולהתאמץ לתקן את החברה. אלה האנשים והנשים שאיתם “כן בונים חומה” ואיתם גם אפשר לבנות גשר: “אחד באחד יגשו ורוח לא תבוא ביניהם. איש באחיו ידובקו ,יתלכדו ולא יתפרדו” ( איוב מא 8-9).
הייתה לי הזכות להוביל את IRAC בעשרים השנים האחרונות, התאפשר לי להיות חלק מקהילה נלהבת ומחויבת לתיקון עולם. ידעתי רגעים של אחווה ושותפות כשגיליתי שכאשר נאבקים ביחד לספק צורך אמיתי של אנשים אמיתיים לא טועים לעולם, גם אם לא מנצחים, אין תחליף לתחושת הייעוד שמתלווה למאבק צודק כנגד אפליה, הדרה או דיכוי.
זה הזמן להגיד תודה לתנועה הרפורמית שהעלתה את תיקון העולם על ראש שמחתה. זה לא מובן מאליו שהרפורמים בישראל הקימו מנגנון מורכב יקר ובועט שמטרתו לאתגר את התנועה, את החברה הישראלית ואת העולם היהודי. שאפו!
אני מכירה תודה לרב אורי רגב שהקים את המרכז הרפורמי לדת ומדינה ועמד בראשו 15 שנים.
חיבוק קולקטיבי חם לכל עובדות ועובדי המרכז בעבר ובהווה. יצרנו ביחד קהילה לוחמת שעשתה שינוי בחייהם של מיליוני ישראלים. עמדנו במרכז הסיוע לעולים לצידן של אלמנות שעמדו לפני גירוש משום שהבעל נפטר לפני תום תהליך ההתאזרחות שלהן. היצלנו ילדים ישראלים מגירוש לנפאל, ליבריה ופיליפינים. עמדנו במשרד הפנים לימינם של גרים רפורמים וקונסרבטיבים במעמד קבלת תעודת הזהות הישראלית. יחד שמנו סוף להדרת נשים באוטובוסים, לימדנו את “אל על ” שעל הדרת נשים משלמים (65 אלף שח), פסלנו גזענים מלהתמודד בבחירות לכנסת, הקמנו את מרכז הסיוע לנפגעי גזענות הראשון בארץ. נאבקנו על זכותן של נשים להספיד בבית עלמין ולעמוד לצד גברים ללא מחיצה.
הופענו בבתי משפט 60 פעמים בשנה, יותר מפעם בשבוע.
יחד הצלחנו להפעיל הלכה למעשה את ערכי השוויון הפלורליזם והסובלנות לטובת אוכלוסיות מוחלשות ומופלות: עולים, מהגרים, פליטים, נוצרים, מוסלמים, בדואים, וכמובן הרפורמים והקונסרבטיבים בישראל.
