Vision / Action: Designers of the Next Generation presents the innovative creativity of the Neri Bloomfield Wizo Academy in Haifa, Israel, whose multi-ethnic faculty and students are demonstrating the role of design and education in transforming Israeli society. Multi-media works reflect how visual thinkers in the vanguard of Israel’s graphic design, visual and digital communications, architecture, photography, video and computerized imaging, and fashion and textile design, are advancing tolerance and revisioning their communities, nation, and global society.

The Academy prepares students from Israel’s northern and central regions for careers in design and education. It is situated in Haifa, one of Israel’s most ethnically and religiously diverse cities, which is renown for its culture of tolerance and understanding. Its 750 students include Jews, Christians, Israeli Arabs, and new immigrants from around the world whose mutual respect and whose ideas on religion, politics, and shared public space reflect the uniquely diverse qualities of that city.

“The HUC-JIR Museum is dedicated to fostering Israeli-North American cultural exchange and celebrating the artistic innovations that are helping to shape Israel’s future,” explains Jean Bloch Rosensaft, Director of the HUC-JIR Museum. “The exceptional creativity and diversity of WIZO Academy’s multicultural, multi-ethnic faculty and students highlights the role that design and education have in fostering dialogue and effecting positive change in society.”

The Academy, founded thirty years ago by the Women’s International Zionist Organization, recognizes that designers play a significant role in society. Therefore, in addition to developing creativity and providing academic training, it strives to impart the many life skills needed to become talented focused professionals in today’s rapidly-changing world. The Academy prepares students to be discerning visual thinkers, ethical practitioners, and design teachers of the next generation. It also challenges them to be cultural communicators who are responsive to the issues facing Israel and the global society today.
