On the way from Brooklyn to Hanover, we heard on the radio that President Eisenhower had sent troops into Little Rock to protect the newly desegregated black students. I knew that in addition to what I intended to speak about I had to include something about this event. I don’t remember what I said, but it was well received by the students and faculty.
When I returned for Yom Kippur, as I was reading the service, a student handed me a note saying that Russia had just launched Sputnik. Well, I knew who the Russians were, but I had no idea what Sputnik was. Nevertheless, I needed to revise my sermon to reflect in some measure on the latest news. Again, it was successful.
I learned early on how to make a last minute revision, a method that would help me through many a situation later in my career.
