Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 states:
“No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving federal financial assistance.”
Title IX is commonly thought as pertaining to sports. However, the law is actually much broader. Title IX prohibits gender discrimination in all programs and activities within a university. It also requires that universities respond promptly and effectively to complaints of all kinds of sexual misconduct and relationship violence. Universities must take immediate action to eliminate the offending conduct, prevent its recurrence, and address its effects.
HUC-JIR is committed to promptly investigating the circumstances of a complaint to determine what occurred, ensure complainant safety, and provide remedies. Regardless of whether the complainant files a criminal action, HUC-JIR will undertake its own investigation of the complaint. Although HUC-JIR’s policies and procedures relating to Title IX are founded on the laws of the United States and the states in which we educate, they are also guided by the mission and values of the College-Institute.
It is the goal of HUC-JIR to provide students, faculty, staff, and guests with an environment free from sexual discrimination, which includes sexual harassment, sexual violence, relationship violence and discrimination related to gender non-conformity. In order to take prompt and equitable corrective action, the College-Institute must be aware of sexual misconduct, relationship violence, discrimination related to gender non-conformity or related retaliation. Therefore, members of the HUC-JIR community who believe that they have been victim of such incidents or know someone who may be a victim by a student, faculty, staff or vendor/supplier are advised to bring the matter to the attention of the Title IX Coordinator.
