Your Year in Israel

Final Checklist

Before your departure for Israel:

  1. Complete required and recommended reading.
  2. Check validity of your passport. (If you or your parents are Israeli citizens, call the nearest Israeli consulate to clarify your status.)
  3. Apply for Israeli student visa.
  4. Send in your financial aid documents .
  5. Arrange for temporary housing upon arrival.
  6. Purchase your plane ticket (note days not to arrive).
  7. Send letter to the Office of Student Services.
  8. Get six (6) passport-sized photographs (vending machine pictures are adequate).
  9. Make arrangements for money to be available to you for your year's expenses.
  10. Be able to get 3 months rent money very quickly.
  11. Apply for credit cards.
  12. Apply for a money market account.
  13. Purchase traveler checks.
  14. Write to or call an HUC student in Jerusalem about housing.
  15. Get a tetanus shot.
  16. Call airline concerning overweight baggage fee.
  17. Investigate shipping options.
  18. Buy mandatory and recommended books.
  19. Buy mandatory and recommended music.
  20. Buy dual-voltage appliances, or converters.
  21. Buy any clothing you will need.
  22. Buy medications, cosmetics, kitchen and general items.
  23. Compare cost and coverage of private health insurance.
  24. Investigate personal belonging insurance options.
  25. Tell friends and relatives to write to you using the HUC address.
