Kitab Teme'ah : Book of Impurity

Monday, October 28, 2019

This small manuscript contains laws of ritual purity especially in the context of marital relations. The fragmentary sheaf of small parchment leaves in Hebrew and Judeo-Arabic comes from the Eastern Mediterranean and was produced sometime early in the 12th century. The text, based on Biblical and Mishnaic material, incorporates Arabic medical material in one of the earliest known expositions of Jewish ritual cleanliness, with an extended treatment of contact with a menstruating woman. Given its age and subject matter, this manuscript is an extreme rarity.
