New York School of Education Gateways for Learning Program: Continuing Education, Certification, and Professional Development

Gateways for Learning is a Continuing Education Program for Jews of all ages and backgrounds who are, or wish to become, Jewish educators. The program is tailored to meet the needs of adult learners.
This program enables participants - working over a period of time, at their own pace, and within a structured program - to explore, assess, develop, and improve their teaching skills; expand their Jewish knowledge; strengthen their Jewish identity; and develop leadership skills.
Gateways for Learning represents a new contribution to Professional Development and Continuing Education with access to academic and other resources, on-site, at extension campuses, and at other HUC-JIR and partner universities. This innovative program:
- offers flexible formats for professional education
- seeks to "professionalize" a vocational teachers in the field
- seeks to further strengthen the skills of professionals
- opens the resources of its School of Education to serve the entire Jewish community
Gateways for Learning offers several options for pursuing training; each can be a first step towards enrolling in a more intensive graduate program:
Professional Development: includes conferences, workshops, lectures, focused discussions, evening courses, and an Summer Institute. There are no qualifications for enrollment.
Continuing Education: In addition to the offerings of the Professional Development program, Continuing Education includes credit-bearing courses. These courses provide students with a focused, on-going study program designed for acquisition of knowledge in subject and pedagogic content. Students have the opportunity to reflect upon and analyze their own professional growth.
To take courses for credit, formal application is necessary. A student must hold an undergraduate degree and submit their most recent college transcript. Courses can be applied towards a certificate and/ or towards a MARE degree.
Certificate Program: A Certificate Program in targeted specialties is open to students who satisfy the requirements for Continuing Education and who have worked in Jewish Education for at least one year. Certificates are currently offered in Adult Education and Family Education. Certificates in Informal Education and Day School Education are also available.
Certificates are awarded after students have completed 18 credits (6 courses) in the Continuing Education program, a two-semester placement in the area of concentration, and an educational project at their placement. Eligible students can apply these credits towards a MARE degree.
