 Professor Rivka Dori Coordinates Seminar Introducing New Concept in Hebrew Language Instruction at HUC-JIR/Los Angeles June 26-30 This summer Professor Rivka Dori, Director of Hebrew Studies at HUC-JIR/Los Angeles is coordinating a seminar that will introduce a new concept in language instruction: "Heritage Learners." The seminar, which will take place at HUC-JIR/ Los Angeles on June 26-30, is sponsored by the National Middle Eastern Languages Resource Center (NMELRC) in conjunction with UCLA Resource Center for Languages (RCL). As the Director of Hebrew Studies at HUC-JIR, Profesor Dori oversees the Hebrew Language program for HUC-JIR's Louchheim School of Judaic Studies, in collaboration with the USC Foreign Language Program, and trains HUC-JIR's graduate and rabbinical students in Biblical and Modern Hebrew. Ever since her arrival to the United States, Professor Rivka Dori has been at the forefront of Hebrew language educational development. She has been a pioneer in the development of Whole Language, Audio, Audio-Lingual, Confluent, Constructive, and the Natural Approaches to Hebrew language education. She has worked with Professor Stephen Krashen, who introduced "Language Acquisition Theory," and under the direction of the late Dr. Ruth Golan of Brandeis University, who developed ACTFL Hebrew Language Guidelines, which form the basis for the current "Hebrew Language Proficiency Movement" that is a leading force in the field of language education today. Professor Dori's communal activities include serving as the Vice-President, Education and Cultural Affairs, for The Council of Israeli Community, as a Committee Member of the URJ-PSW Executive Committee, and as Education Committee Member of the LA-Tel Aviv Partnership. |
