New CD Recording of Cantorial Concert Celebrating 125th Anniversary of HUC-JIR

Celebrated cantors join faculty and students from the School of Sacred Music (SSM) at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion (HUC-JIR) in a just released CD-recording of the live concert celebrating HUC-JIR's 125th anniversary, which took place at Congregation Rodeph Sholom on April 26, 2001. This concert was presented in conjunction with Congregation Rodeph Sholom's annual Rabbi Gunter Hirschberg Memorial Concert.

The recording features a broad range of repertoire composed by the renowned masters of Jewish liturgical, folk, and art music and performed in in Hebrew,Yiddish, and English:

Performing these works are Cantors Rebecca Garfein, Mikhal Shiff-Matter, Jennifer Frost, Jacob Mendelson, Israel Goldstein, Benjie Ellen Schiller, Richard Botton, Debra Stein, Faith Steinsnyder, David Lefkowitz, Sharon Kohn, Robert Abelson, Martha Novick, Andrew Edison, Samuel Radwine, Ellen Dreskin, and Merri Lovinger. They are accompanied by the School of Sacred Music Choir, comprised of 31 cantorial students, with Joyce Rosenzweig as conductor and pianist and Beth Robin as pianist.

This concert celebrated HUC-JIR's 125 years of achievement as the academic, spiritual, and professional leadership development center of Reform Judaism. It also paid tribute to Rabbi Hirschberg, of blessed memory, for his special love of the arts, his ability to encourage others to pursue their talents, and his dedicated service to Congregation Rodeph Sholom, where he served as Cantor from 1952 until he was ordained a rabbi at HUC-JIR/New York in 1963, and then as Senior Rabbi until his death in 1989.

This concert and recording were made possible through the generous support of The Max and Florence Minsky Music Fund, established in 1994 by Florence Minsky Goldstein in memory of her beloved husband, Max Minsky, and by the 125th Anniversary Concert sponsors and donors to the School of Sacred Music's 50th Anniversary.
