Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion
Food For Thought Luncheon Lecture 2003-2004 Series

Rabbi David Ellenson, Ph.D.
President, Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion

"Jewish Religious Denominationalism: 19th Century Origins, Contemporary Meanings"

"As a result of the political, cultural, religious, and social transformations that characterized Jewish life in Germany during the 19th century, modern Jewish religious movements -Reform, Conservative and Orthodox - arose. This lecture will explore the nature of the multiple religious responses to these transformations, and will explore the similarities as well as the differences that informed each movement. Rabbi Ellenson will reflect on the ongoing meaning of these movements in an American setting today that is radically different from the context that originally gave birth to them."
