Join us in celebrating the real-life stories of less-known people who despite their anonymity have made a real impact on others. Our evening opens with Julia Newman’s Into the Fire: American Women in the Spanish Civil War, followed by Howard Weinberg’s Sid at 90.

Into the Fire: American Women in the Spanish Civil War is a portrait of a group of intrepid American women, mainly nurses with some notable journalists and writers who joined over 2700 of their countrymen to volunteer for the Spanish Civil War, the first major battle against Fascism. Produced and directed by Julia Newman, Into the Fire focuses on sixteen of these women, telling in their own words their stories of courage and commitment to a just cause.

Sid at 90 is a picture of rare perseverance that celebrates a journeyman actor’s pure love of performance. Although Sid Raymond would not become a star he did not give up the desire to entertain and spent his life performing from the Catskill Mountains to the front in World War II, from summer stock to Broadway, and from Madison Avenue to Hollywood. His is a journey that inspires actors, older Americans, and anyone who has ever clung to a passion. Sid at 90 is produced and directed by Howard Weinberg.

Often in life we turn to the ordinary to discover extraordinary people and things. What once appeared as considerably less is suddenly much more significant. Into the Fire and Sid at 90 are two rare treats that are testimonies to the extraordinary people that we meet.
