Launches its Intensive Summer Institute
June 9-20, 2003
Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion’s New York School of
Education launches the 2003 Intensive Summer Institute. This new program is
part of the School of Education’s Gateways for Learning program, offering
continuing education and certification in Adult Education and Jewish Family
Education.
Gateways for Learning is a Continuing Education program for Jews of all ages
and backgrounds who are, or wish to become, Jewish Educators. The program, tailored
to meet the needs of adult learners, enables participants— working over
a period of time, at their own pace, and within a structured program—
to explore, assess, develop, and improve their teaching skills, expand their
Jewish knowledge; strengthen their Jewish identity; and develop their leadership
skills.

FINDING YOUR FAMILY IN THE TEXT

Study “families, ” as seen through current demographic realities
and classic Jewish texts. Biblical, Talmudic, and Midrashic stories will be
examined against current texts and personal histories. The course will also
present the study of “family dynamics,” and “family process,”
as students are encouraged to think about how to incorporate text into their
work with families of all ages.

THE JEWISH BOOKSHELF: AN INTRODUCTION GREAT JEWISH TEXTS

Gain basic knowledge of the fundamental Jewish texts. Examine briefly, the Bible,
Mishnah, Talmud, selected Midrash and Codes.

TEACHING BIBLE TO ADULT LEARNERS
Dr. Lisa Grant, Assistant Professor of Jewish Education, HUC-JIR
(3 credits or non-credit)
Adults engage in text study for a variety of reasons and they are taught in
diverse settings. This course will explore multiple approaches to interpreting
and teaching biblical texts. Students will have an opportunity to practice teaching
from different parts of the Bible, in a number of settings, such as a weekly
a parshat ha-shavuah class, an extended adult education course, and a one-time
lecture.

INTRODUCTION TO LITURGY: HOW TO NAVIGATE THE PRAYERBOOK

What is the basic structure of the prayerbook? How did the prayerbook develop?
How do prayerbooks differ from movement to movement? What do the prayers mean?
Explore the meaning, history and development of the Jewish worship service.

TEACHING HEBREW: ENRICHING YOUR CURRICULA

This course is designed to enable teachers of Hebrew in Congregational and Day
Schools to enrich their curricula. Students will explore the techniques of language
acquisition that can best be utilized when teaching children and adults and
consider the factors that make Hebrew language learning successful. The Jewish
Year and Israeli culture will be examined as two possible lenses for language
learning.
Courses may be taken for credit and applied to a Certificate in Adult Education
or a Certificate in Family Education. Certificates will be awarded to qualifying
students who complete 18 credits, a year-long placement in the area of specialization,
and an education project at their placement.
Tuition: $900 per week for full-day 3 credit course
$320 per week for non-credit full-day course
$160 per week for non-credit half-day course
