Food For Thought Luncheon Lecture 2003-2004 Series

“...let slip the dogs of war…”:
The Use (and Abuse) of Rhetoric

Rabbi Kenneth E. Ehrlich
Dean
HUC-JIR, Cincinnati

Rhetoric is often defined as "the effective use of persuasive language." Their protestations not withstanding, politicians, artists, businesspersons, and clergy all use (and sometimes abuse) rhetoric in their attempts to pursuade others. This Food for Thought lecture will examine the principles of rhetoric, provide examples of the effective use of rhetoric, and offer insights into how and why we allow ourselves to be persuaded.
