Common Ground for the Common Life: the Psalms and Life’s Dimensions

Dr. C. Hassell Bullock, Professor of Old Testament and the Franklin S. Dyrness Chair of Biblical Studies at Wheaton College in Illinois will present “Common Ground for the Common Life: the Psalms and Life’s Dimensions” at the next Food for Thought Luncheon Lecture. This presentation, co-sponsored by Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion’s School of Graduate Studies, will show that the Psalms can be accessible instruments for venting the emotional dimensions of life (joy, sorrow, and anger) in a constructive way. The lecture will take place at 12:30 pm on Wednesday, April 9, 2003 at HUC-JIR’s Mayerson Hall Auditorium, 3101 Clifton Avenue.

Dr. Bullock received his Ph.D. from Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion and holds a B.A. from Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama, and a B.D. from Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, Georgia. He has published on the prophets, and poetic literature, and his latest work is Encountering the Book of Psalms (Baker, 2001). From April 7-10, 2003, Dr. Bullock will serve as the Graduate Alumnus-In-Residence at HUC-JIR. In addition to presenting at Food For Thought, Dr. Bullock will conduct graduate student seminars as well as meet with students about careers in academia.

In its thirteenth season, Food For Thought features scholars and members of the HUC-JIR community who discuss their fields of interest, expertise, and recent research with the public. The Department of Outreach Education invites the community to attend this lecture with renowned scholar Dr. C. Hassell Bullock. A hot buffet lunch will be available at 12:00 pm for $8; reservations are necessary. There is a $2 fee to attend the lecture only.
