Rabbi David Ellenson, President of Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of
Religion (HUC-JIR), delivered the 26th Rabbi Louis Feinberg lecture Tuesday,
May 27, at 8 p.m at the University of Cincinnati (UC). Rabbi Ellenson spoke
on "A Vision for American Judaism: Past Reality, Future Direction."
"Professor Ellenson is an insightful interpreter of modern Jewish history,
and is now a leading voice framing the future of American Judaism," said
Steven Fine, head of the department of Judaic studies and incumbent of the Jewish
Foundation chair in Judaic studies. "David and I have been colleagues for
many years, ever since I was a graduate student at the University of Southern
California and he was a professor at the adjacent HUC campus in Los Angeles."
Fine said that the lecture by Rabbi Ellenson symbolizes the warm relationship
that has developed between the leadership of the local HUC-JIR and UC campuses.
"Joint programs are now in place at every level, from our shared junior
faculty group to joint research between faculty, joint conferences and projects
that benefit students of both institutions," said Fine. "A joint MA
is in the works. Cincinnati's Judaic studies community is among the largest
in the US--between HUC and ourselves, our city is a true academic powerhouse."
