Leading scholars, trial lawyers, and legal theorists will explore Judaism’s
take on the death penalty, from a historical, philosophical, and practical angle:
Dr. Steven Greenwald, President of the Metropolitan College of New York, has
represented capital defendants in post-conviction proceedings in North
Carolina and Alabama for over 10 years. He is a member of the Board of Governors
of
the American Association of Jewish Lawyers and Jurists.
Nat Lewin has engaged in trial and appellate litigation in federal and state
courts for forty years. His clients have included Richard Nixon, Jodi Foster,
and John Lennon. He has taught law at Harvard, Columbia, and the University
of Chicago. From 1970-1991 he was Contributing Editor to The New Republic.
Rabbi Michael Chernick is Deutsch Professor of Jewish Jurisprudence and Social
Justice and Professor of Rabbinics at HUC-JIR. He is the editor of Essential
Papers on the Talmud and has written on the Talmud and Jewish law. Suzanne Last
Stone, Professor of Law at Cardozo School of Law, Yeshiva University has published
and lectured extensively in the areas of Jewish religious and legal thought
and contemporary legal theory. She has taught at Hebrew University Law School
and Columbia Law School.

The Dr. Jules Backman Memorial Lecture is made possible through the generosity
of the late Dr. Jules Backman, former chairman of the Board of Governors of
HUC-JIR. A nationally prominent authority on prices, labor, and antitrust issues,
Dr. Backman taught at NYU for more than forty years and was Research Professor
Emeritus of Economics.
