Evan Moffic to present "In Search of the
Jewish People:
Modern Jewish Thinkers and HUC-JIR's Year-in-Israel Program" at
Food for Thought Lecture
Evan Moffic, second year rabbinical student at Hebrew Union College-Jewish
Institute of Religion will present "In Search of the Jewish People:
Modern Jewish Thinkers and HUC-JIR's Year-in-Israel Program" at
the next Food for Thought Luncheon Lecture. The lecture will take
place at noon on Wednesday, December 11, 2002 at Hebrew Union College-Jewish
Institute of Religion's Mayerson Hall Auditorium, 3101 Clifton Avenue,
Cincinnati.
The lecture will look at the role of the State of Israel and the
concept of Jewish peoplehood in the works of key twentieth-century
Jewish thinkers including Martin Buber, Abraham Joshua Heschel,
Mordechai Kaplan, and Eugene Borowitz. Delving into these varied
perspectives of Jewish peoplehood, participants will come to an
understanding of the influencing factors determining the Year-in-Israel
requirement for first year rabbinical, cantorial, and education
students of the College-Institute.
Mr. Evan Moffic spent 2001-2002 in Israel on the Year-in-Israel
program of the College-Institute where he studied Hebrew language
and encountered the land and people of Israel through specialized
programs. He received his BA with high honors in history and a focus
on American and modern Jewish history from Stanford University.
During 2000-2001, he served as an Eisendrath Fellow and legislative
assistant at the Religion Action Center of Reform Judaism in Washington,
DC.
