Franchon Shur Dance Program at HUC-JIR/Cincinnati

Fanchon Shur, Choreographer and Director of Growth in Motion, will present “Dancing in Prayer,” at the next Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion Food for Thought Luncheon Lecture Series. Through video, discussion, and movement demonstration, participants will focus on how the body, its movement, and its intelligence is a source for prayer. This session will take place at noon on Wednesday, January 16, 2002 in Mayerson Hall Auditorium at the College-Institute, 3101 Clifton Avenue.

Since 1978 Fanchon Shur has been the Director of Growth in Motion, Inc. a unique, non-profit, cultural organization that includes The Fanchon Shur Ceremonial Dance Theater. Fanchon has choreographed and created pieces for film, concert, stage, and communal celebrations. Tallit: Prayer Shawl, Sarah, Speak! and Purses, Pockets, and Family Secrets are well known to Cincinnatians. Fanchon’s work merges psychology, multicultural sacred ceremonies, theater, dance, chanting, and Jewish traditions with ancient and contemporary women’s spirituality.

In its twelfth season, Food For Thought features HUC-JIR faculty and scholars who discuss their fields of expertise and recent research with the public. The Department of Outreach Education invites the community to experience prayer from a different perspective with acclaimed choreographer, dancer, movement therapist, and teacher, Fanchon Shur. A hot buffet lunch will be available for $8; reservations are necessary. To learn more about Food For Thought, the Department of Outreach Education at HUC-JIR, or to make a reservation contact Marcia Cruse, (513) 221-1875, ext 353.
