Franchon Shur Dance Program at
HUC-JIR/Cincinnati
Fanchon Shur, Choreographer and Director of Growth in Motion,
will present “Dancing in Prayer,” at the next Hebrew Union College-Jewish
Institute of Religion Food for Thought Luncheon Lecture Series.
Through video, discussion, and movement demonstration, participants
will focus on how the body, its movement, and its intelligence is
a source for prayer. This session will take place at noon on Wednesday,
January 16, 2002 in Mayerson Hall Auditorium at the College-Institute,
3101 Clifton Avenue.
Since 1978 Fanchon Shur has been the Director of Growth in
Motion, Inc. a unique, non-profit, cultural organization that
includes The Fanchon Shur Ceremonial Dance Theater. Fanchon has
choreographed and created pieces for film, concert, stage, and communal
celebrations. Tallit: Prayer Shawl, Sarah, Speak! and Purses,
Pockets, and Family Secrets are well known to Cincinnatians.
Fanchon’s work merges psychology, multicultural sacred ceremonies,
theater, dance, chanting, and Jewish traditions with ancient and
contemporary women’s spirituality.
In its twelfth season, Food For Thought features HUC-JIR
faculty and scholars who discuss their fields of expertise and recent
research with the public. The Department of Outreach Education invites
the community to experience prayer from a different perspective
with acclaimed choreographer, dancer, movement therapist, and teacher,
Fanchon Shur. A hot buffet lunch will be available for $8; reservations
