Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion is launching
a new Continuing Legal Education program with Legal Ethics in Jewish
and American Law, a two-session course taught by Russell G. Pearce,
Professor of Law and Co-Director of the Louis Stein Center for Ethics
and Law at Fordham University School of Law.
This course will compare and contrast secular and Jewish perspectives
on the lawyer's role with attention to selected provisions of the
New York Code of Professional Responsibility and their counterparts
in Jewish law. The course will consider the extent to which the
obligations of Jewish law and American legal ethics conflict with
or complement each other; whether a Jewish construct of the role
of the lawyer is possible; and the application of American and Jewish
texts to hypotheticals raising issues of confidentiality, conflicts
of interest, pro bono service, and counseling.
Russell G. Pearce is Professor of Law and Co-Director of the Louis
Stein Center for Ethics and Law at Fordham University School of
Law. A graduate of Yale College and Yale Law School where he served
on the Law Journal, he has written and lectured extensively in the
field of legal ethics. He has been an associate at Fried, Frank,
Harris, Shriver & Jacobson, a staff attorney in the Chelsea Neighborhood
Office of the Legal Aid Society, and General Counsel to the New
York City Commission on Human Rights. He is the recipient of the
Sanford D. Levy Memorial Award from the New York State Bar Association
"in recognition of his contribution to understanding and advancement
in the field of professional ethics."
The course will fulfill fours hours of Continuing Legal Education
(Ethics and Professionalism) accreditation. Each session is approved
for 2 ethics credit hours in accordance with the requirements of
the New York State Continuing Legal Education Board. Registration
