Graduation/Ordination/Investiture Advisory

Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion is proud to announce the ordination, investiture, graduate degree, and honorary degree recipients of the Class of 1999. The College-Institute will ordain 45 rabbis (24 men, 21 women) at Ordination Services in Cincinnati and New York and will invest 6 cantors (1 man, 5 women) at Investiture Services in New York. In addition, 41 rabbinic students will receive the degree of Master of Arts in Hebrew Letters/ Literature and six students will receive the Master of Sacred Music degree. Sixteen students will receive graduate degrees -- Ph.D. in Semitic Languages, Ph.D. in History of Biblical Interpretation, Ph.D. in Rabbinic Literature, Doctor of Ministry, Doctor of Hebrew Studies, Master of Philosophy in Hebraic and Cognate Studies, Master of Arts in Judaic Studies, or Master of Arts. Thirteen students will receive the degree of Master of Arts in Jewish Communal Service. Seven students will receive education degrees -- Master of Arts in Religious Education, Joint Masters of Arts in Jewish Communal Service and Jewish Education, or Master of Arts in Jewish Education.

A breakdown of degree recipients by School and program follows:

New York Graduation -- May 13, 1999
Rabbinic School
Twenty-five students (12 male, 13 female) will receive the Master of Arts in Hebrew Literature, leading to rabbinic ordination.
The School of Education
One male student will receive the degree on Master of Arts in Religious Education.
School of Sacred Music
The six students who will be invested as cantors on May 16 will also receive the Master of Sacred Music degree at graduation.
Graduate Studies
Four students (3 male, 1 female), who are already rabbis, will receive the Doctor of Ministry degree in Pastoral Care and Counseling.

New York Ordination -- May 16, 1999
Rabbinic School
The New York School will ordain 23 rabbis (13 men and 10 women).
School of Sacred Music
The SSM will invest six cantors (1 man and 5 women).

Los Angeles Graduation -- May 17, 1999
Rabbinic School
Twelve students (4 male, 8 female) will receive the Master of Arts in Hebrew Letters, leading to rabbinic ordination.
The Rhea Hirsch School of Education
Two female students will receive the Joint Masters of Arts in Jewish Communal Service and Jewish Education. Four students (1 male, 3 female) will receive the degree of Master of Arts in Jewish Education.
The Edgar F. Magnin School of Graduate Studies
One female student will receive the degree of Master of Arts in Judaic Studies. One female student will receive the degree of Doctor of Hebrew Studies.
The Irwin Daniels School of Jewish Communal Service
Thirteen students (4 male, 9 female) will receive the Master of Arts in Jewish Communal Service.

Cincinnati Graduation -- June 2, 1999
Rabbinic School
Two female students will receive the degree of Master of Arts in Hebrew Letters leading to rabbinic ordination.
The School of Graduate Studies
Four male students will receive the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. Four students (3 male, 1 female) will receive the degree of Master of Philosophy in Hebraic and Cognate Studies. Two male students will receive the degree of Master of Arts.

Cincinnati Ordination -- June 5, 1999
Rabbinic School
The Cincinnati School will ordain 22 rabbis (11 men, 11 women).
