Rabbi Sheldon Marder Appointed
Director of the Rabbinic School in Los Angeles

Rabbi Sheldon Zimmerman, President of Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, announced the appointment of Rabbi Sheldon J. Marder as Director of the School of Rabbinic Studies for the California campus. The appointment is effective July 1, 1997. Rabbi Marder, who has served in the College-Institute's administration since 1989, will continue in his current post of Associate Dean. He has been Acting Dean during the 1996/1997 academic year. A graduate of the State University of New York at Stony Brook, Rabbi Marder was ordained at the College-Institute's New York campus in 1978. Prior to joining the HUC-JIR administration, he served Temple Israel of Long Beach, California; he was Jewish chaplain at UCLA and St. Vincent Medical Centers; and for the past three years he has co-led the New Emanuel Minyan at Temple Emanuel in Beverly Hills.

Rabbi Marder has served on the board of the College-Institute's Wexner Rabbinic Residencies Program, now funded by the Rabbinic Alumni Association. He takes particular pleasure in his work as chair of L.A. campus admissions committees, student advisement, the development of co-curricular programs and supervision of rabbinic fieldwork. Since the early 1980s Rabbi Marder has taught the topic of prayer in the hospital to HUC-JIR rabbinic students. He has brought to his rabbinate extensive social service experience in the area of aging and service to the institutionalized elderly. Rabbi Marder's special areas of Judaic interest are liturgy and Biblical poetry. He is married to Rabbi Janet Ross Marder, director of the Pacific Southwest Council of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations. They have two daughters, Betsy and Rachel.
