"Burton Lehman possesses a passionate, personal commitment to Jewish learning and to the on-going creative American Jewish experience. As Chairman of the Board of Governors of the College-Institute, he will lead us to new paths of accomplishment and fulfillment," stated Rabbi Zimmerman.
Mr. Lehman, a member of Schulte Roth & Zabel's executive committee, is a senior partner in the law firm's Corporate and Real Estate departments with an expertise in general corporate, securities and business law, and real estate law. A 1962 graduate of Columbia College, he received the J.D. degree, magna cum laude, from Columbia Law School in 1965, where he was a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar (1963-1965) and Writing and Research Editor of the Columbia Law Review (1964-1965). He served as Law Clerk to the Hon. Harold R. Medina in the U.S. Court of Appeals, Second Circuit (1965-1966) and as Assistant Counsel, Temporary New York State Commission on Constitutional Convention (1966).
Mr. Lehman's professional leadership has extended to his service as Chairman of the New York City Bar Association Program on Institutional Investors, Corporate Governance and Proxy Reform (1991) and his membership on various New York State Bar Association Committees. He is also a member of The Florida Bar.
A member of the Board of Overseers of HUC-JIR's New York School since 1989, where he served as Vice Chair (1991-1995) and Chair (1995-1996), Mr. Lehman was inducted onto the College-Institute's Board of Governors in 1991, where he has served as a member of the Executive Committee.
Mr. Lehman is a Trustee of Central Synagogue, where he has served on the Nominating, By-Law Revision and Rabbinic Search Committees. He was a member of the Dean's Council of Columbia Law School (1990-1994) and served as Chairman of the 25th Reunion Fund (1990). He has also served as a Trustee of the Town School, New York (1979-1989).
He is married to the former Brenda Le Vine and they are the parents of two children, Stephen and Douglas, and the grandparents of Matthew Henry.
HUC-JIR's Board of Governors is the College-Institute's national governing board. Serving on the Board of Governors are distinguished Jewish communal and civic leaders and heads of the Reform Movement's arms, including the leaders of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations, the Central Conference of American Rabbis, and the Women of Reform Judaism. Alumni of the College-Institute's rabbinic, cantorial, education, communal service, and graduate studies programs are also represented on the Board of Governors. HUC-JIR's Governors are a major source of guidance and support in determining, with HUC-JIR's administration, the mission, programs, and policies of the College-Institute.
