Elliot B. Karp Appointed Vice-President for Development

Elliot B. Karp has been appointed Vice-President for Development at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion by Rabbi Sheldon Zimmerman, President of the College-Institute. "Elliot Karp's expertise as a distinguished professional leader of Jewish academic and communal institutions will help guide our planning for the future," stated Rabbi Zimmerman. Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion is the academic and professional leadership development center of Reform Judaism. It trains rabbis, cantors, educational and communal professionals, and scholars at its learning centers in Cincinnati, New York, Los Angeles and Jerusalem.

Mr. Karp has served on the national management team for UJA overseeing all major gifts solicitations and programmatics, assisted in the development and implementation of local Federations' successful solicitation programs, and managed policy, planning, campaign, program and operations committees for major fund raising enterprises. He has developed strategies for campaign growth, supervised significant endowment programs, and designed domestic and Israel missions and Jewish educational programming. He has also coordinated public relations, marketing, publications and media relations programs, facilitated communal and congregational relations, and created leadership development and succession programs to ensure new generations of philanthropic leadership. Mr. Karp has managed staff recruitment and training, coordinated facility relocation, and initiated the establishment of the first state-wide Government Affairs Office for Ohio Jewish communities.

Mr. Karp joins the College-Institute on July 1, 1998 after serving as Associate Vice President and National Director of Major Gifts for United Jewish Appeal. He previously served as Director of Campaign and Endowment Development for the Jewish Federation of Cincinnati, Vice President for Development at Brandeis University, Director of Leadership and Human Resource Development and Assistant Campaign Director at the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia, and Director of the Community Relations Council and Campaign Staff Associate at the Jewish Federation of Columbus, Ohio.

Mr. Karp received a B.A. in political science from the State University of New York, Stony Brook, NY, and a M.A. in the Benjamin S. Hornstein Program in Jewish Communal Service at Brandeis University. He has a Certificate from the Executive Management Education Program at the University of Cincinnati's College of Business Administration and has pursued graduate studies at the Jewish Theological Seminary's Rabbinical School.

Recognized for his contributions to communal service, Mr. Karp is the recipient of the 1996 Vivian Rabineau Award for Outstanding Campaign Director from the Council of Jewish Federations and the 1995 Bernard Reisman Award for Outstanding Professional Leadership from Brandeis University. He has served as the Chairman and Vice Chairman of the Council of Jewish Federations Campaign Directors Institute and Program Chairman of its Institute in Jerusalem, Israel and Kiev, Ukraine, and as a member of the Board of Directors of the Association of Jewish Community Organization Personnel and Chairman of its annual Conference of Jewish Communal Service. Mr. Karp is a member of the Editorial Committee of the Journal of Jewish Communal Service and past President of the Alumni Association for the Hornstein Program - Brandeis University.
