Graduation/Ordination/Investiture Advisory
Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion is proud to announce the ordination, investiture, graduate, and honorary degree recipients of the Class of 2001. Founded in 1875, HUC-JIR is the nation's oldest institution of higher Jewish education and the academic, spiritual, and professional development center of Reform Judaism. The College-Institute will ordain 49 rabbis (23 men, 26 women) at Ordination Services in Cincinnati and Investiture and Ordination Ceremonies in New York, and will invest 11 cantors (3 men, 8 women) in New York. In addition, 31 rabbinical students will receive the degree of Master of Arts in Hebrew Literature/Letters and 11 students will receive the Master of Sacred Music degree. Fourteen students will receive graduate degrees – 5 Doctor of Ministry, 3 Doctor of Philosophy, 1 Doctor of Hebrew Letters, 2 Master of Philosophy in Hebraic and Cognate Studies, and 3 Master of Arts. Five students will receive the degree of Master of Arts in Jewish Communal Service. Eighteen students will receive education degrees – Joint Masters of Arts in Jewish Communal Service and Jewish Education, Master of Arts in Jewish Education, and Master of Arts in Religious Education.
The College-Institute will bestow honorary degrees upon the following recipients:

Los Angeles Graduation – May 14, 2001
Rabbinical School
Nine students (4 men, 5 women) will receive the Master of Arts in Hebrew Letters, leading to rabbinical ordination.
Three students (2 men, 1 woman) completed their rabbinical studies in Los Angeles and will be ordained in New York on May 20.
The Rhea Hirsch School of Education
Three students (1 man, 2 women) will receive the Joint Masters of Arts in Jewish Communal Service and Jewish Education. Eleven students (3 men, 8 women) will receive the degree of Master of Arts in Jewish Education.
The Irwin Daniels School of Jewish Communal Service
Five students (all women) will receive the Master of Arts in Jewish Communal Service.
New York Graduation – May 17, 2001
Rabbinical School
Ten students (3 men, 7 women) will receive the Master of Arts in Hebrew Literature, leading to rabbinical ordination.
School of Sacred Music
The 11 students who will be invested as cantors on May 20 will also receive the Master of Sacred Music degree at graduation.
Graduate Studies
Five students will receive the Doctor of Ministry degree; one student will receive the Doctor of Hebrew Letters degree; four students will receive the Master of Arts in Religious Education degree.
New York Investiture and Ordination – May 20, 2001
Rabbinical School
The New York School will ordain 31 rabbis (14 men and 17 women).
School of Sacred Music
The SSM will invest 11 cantors (3 men and 8 women).
Cincinnati Graduation – May 30, 2001
Rabbinical School
Twelve students (10 men, 2 women) will receive the degree of Master of Arts in Hebrew Letters leading to rabbinical ordination.
The School of Graduate Studies
Three male students will receive the degree of Ph.D. Two students (both women) will receive the degree of Master of Philosophy in Hebraic and Cognate Studies. Three students (1 man, 2 women) will receive the degree of Master of Arts.
