Dr. Eugene Borowitz has played a defining role in contemporary liberal Jewish theology. His intellectual rigor, his extraordinary talent as a teacher, his gift of personal attention have inspired students for over three decades. On the occasion of Dr. Borowitz's 70th birthday, we are delighted to announce the publication of Jewish Spiritual Journeys. In this collection of personal essays, twenty prominent rabbis reflect on how this gifted teacher and mentor has helped to shape the life and path they have chosen.
Please come celebrate with us on Thursday, May 1st, from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM, in the Sanctuary at Hebrew Union College, One West Fourth Street, New York City. Dr. Borowitz will be joined by six contributors to this commemorative volume. Presentations will be followed by questions and answers, and a reception. Join the New York Kollel as we continue to offer lecture/study opportunities free to the public.
Dr. Eugene Borowitz is the Sigmund L. Falk Distinguished Professor of Education and Jewish Religious Thought at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, where he has taught since 1962. He has played a defining role in contemporary liberal Jewish theology. His intellectual rigor, extraordinary talent as a teacher, and gift of personal attention have inspired students for more than three decades. He is the author of thirteen books, including Renewing the Covenant: A Theology for the Postmodern Jew. He is will known in the Jewish community as the editor of Sh'ma, a journal of Jewish responsibility, which he founded in 1970.
Jewish Spiritual Journeys (Behrman House Publishers) is edited by Lawrence A. Hoffman and Arnold J. Wolf. The contributors who will make presentations at this celebratory evening are: Dr. Norman J. Cohen, Provost and Professor of Midrash, HUC-JIR; Rabbi Rachel Cowan, Director, Jewish Life Program, Nathan Cummings Foundation; Rabbi Joan S. Friedman, Jewish Chaplain and Instructor in Religion, Colgate University; Dr. Lawrence A. Hoffman, Professor of Liturgy, HUC-JIR, and co-editor of Jewish Spiritual Journeys; Rabbi Lawrence Kushner, Congregation Beth El, Sudbury, Massachusetts; and Rabbi Andrea Weiss, Ph.D. candidate at University of Pennsylvania.
