Rivka Dori, Director Emerita of Hebrew Studies at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, received the Sherut La-Am Award at HUC-JIR’s Graduation Ceremony in Los Angeles. The convocation took place on Monday, May 14, 2012 at 3 p.m. at the College-Institute’s Jack H. Skirball Campus, 3077 University Avenue.
A native Israeli with more than 50 years experience as an educator, Dori was honored for her lifelong commitment and dedication to generations of students. She teaches in the Jerome H. Louchheim School of Judaic Studies, where her specialties are Hebrew language and culture instruction, applied linguistics, teacher training, and confluent education.
Dori received her teaching credential in Israel and a bachelor’s degree in religious education from the University of Judaism. Additionally, she has a master’s degree in Hebrew Education from HUC-JIR, a master’s degree in teacher education from the University of Southern California, and an Honorary Doctor of Philosophy from HUC-JIR. Dori began teaching at the College-Institute in 1973.
Past recipients of the distinguished award have included Ilene and Stanley Gold, Debbie Friedman, z”l, Gideon Kaufman, and Lenny Thal.
