Thomas G. Cody received the Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa, at HUC-JIR’s Graduation Ceremony in Cincinnati. The convocation took place at Isaac M. Wise Temple (8329 Ridge Road) on Thursday, May 19, 2011 at 7:30 pm.
Rabbi David Ellenson, Ph.D., President, HUC-JIR, states, "Thomas Cody's service to the world of business attests to his personal commitment to the vital existance of principled and athical business practices. His manifold talents, fused with legal expertise and practical sense, elevated him to national corporate leadership, where his guidance and direction have contributed to the growth and progress of Macy's, Inc. for more than two decades."
Thomas G. Cody is Retired Vice Chairman of Macy's Inc., a position he has held since 2003. He has been responsible for legal and human resources, internal audit, external affairs, and the company's philanthropic activities.
Cody joined Macy's Inc. in 1982 as Senior Vice President for law and public affairs, general counsel, and corporate secretary. In 1992, he was promoted to Executive Vice President, responsible for legal and human resources.
Before coming to Macy's Inc., Cody practiced law in New York, and taught law at St. John's University School of Law and Fordham University School of Law. He jioned Pan Am World Airways, Inc. in 1976 as assistant general counsel. He was promoted six years later to Senior Vice President, General Counsel, and Secretary.
Cody, who is a former Chairman of the United Way and Community Chest, has a diverse community service background. He is also a past chair of the Greater Cincinnati Chamber of Commerce Board of Trustees and former Co-Chair of Cincinnati Community Action Now (C.A.N.). He serves on the Board of Directors of CTS Corporation, Ohio National Financial Services, In., and The Ohio Naional Life Insurance Company. He is the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center and is also a member of the Boards of Trustees of Xavier University, The Children's Hospital, the Greater Cincinnati Foundation, and is a former member of the Great Cincinnnati Chamber of Commerce and the Cincinnati Business Committee.
Cody, who is a native of New York, received an undergraduate degree from Maryknoll College and a J.D. degree from St. John's University School of Law.
He and his wife, Mary Ellen, reside in Covington, Kentucky.
