Carole Gould, a fifth-year rabbinical student at HUC-JIR/New York, recently published “On Suffering: A Chaplain’s Letter” in the Journal of Pastoral Care & Counseling, Vol. 65, No. 1, Spring 2011.

The Journal of Pastoral Care & Counseling advances theory and professional practice through scholarly and reflective literature on pastoral and spiritual care, counseling, psychotherapy, education, and research.

Gould draws on Jewish tradition to answer an unnamed person who asks, Why did God give me cancer?  What did I do to deserve it? How can I believe in a God who does such terrible things? Where is God in my suffering?
