HUC-JIR’s Jack H. Skirball Campus in Los Angeles is hosting an artists’ reception on Wednesday, November 16, 2011, for its newest exhibition, “Jewish Ritual: Rethinking, Renewed.” Organized in collaboration with the Jewish Artists Initiative (JAI) of Southern California and curated by Georgia Freedman-Harvey, the display features the work of 16 Jewish artists.
At the heart of the exhibit is this question: How can art add more relevance to rituals that play an important role in the personal lives of artists and their communities? It is based on the idea that rethinking and/or renewing how one engages in rituals allows one to reconnect with Judaism.
The event will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. at HUC-JIR, located at 3077 University Ave., Los Angeles. Freedman-Harvey will speak at 7:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the community. Please RSVP by November 1, 2011 to Delicia Sauerwald at 213-765-2106 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
The featured artists are: Bill Aron, Elizabeth Bloom, Carol Es, Benny Ferdman, Carol Goldmark, Laurie Gross, Marcie Kaufman, Eileen Levinson, Peachy Levy, Laurel Paley, Victor Raphael, Ilana Schachter, Doni Silver Simons, Ruth Snyder, Erella Teitler, and Ruth Weisberg.
The exhibition will continue through December 31, 2011. Gallery tours are available by appointment only by contacting email@example.com.
“Jewish Ritual: Rethinking, Renewed” is a collaboration between the Jewish Artists Initiative (JAI) of Southern California, which receives support from the Jewish Community Foundation of Los Angeles, and HUC-JIR/Los Angeles’ Enhancement Committee.
