Rabbi David Ellenson, President of Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion (HUC-JIR), awarded Jerry Tanenbaum the Sherut L'Am Award at Graduation Ceremonies in Cincinnati on Thursday, May 19, 2011, at Isaac M. Wise Temple. The Sherut L’Am award recognizes exceptional service to the College-Institute or to the Jewish People. Prior recipients have included Debbie Friedman, z’’l, and Ilene and Stanley Gold. Tanenbaum will be honored for his years of dedicated service to the Jewish people as Chairman of the Yad B'Yad Task Force of the World Union for Progressive Judaism and Governor Emeritus of HUC-JIR. Tanenbaum also be confirmed Graduation and Honorary Degrees and brought congratulations and greetings at Ordination from the Union for Reform Judaism.
Rabbi David Ellenson, Ph.D., President, HUC-JIR, said, "Jerry Tanenbaum has given ceaselessly and untiringly of his gifts of mind and heart to the preservation of world Jewry. His guidance, direction, and wise counsel have contributed to the development and growth of the Torah Project, where more than 100 Sifrei Torah have been donated to congregations in Europe, Asia, and South America. His bondless energy, along with his life’s partner, Pat, z”l, have found personal expression in their commitment to the World Union for Progressive Judaism."
Since 2002, Tanenbaum has served as Chairman of the Yad B’Yad Task Force at the World Union for Progressive Judaism (WUPJ). He served as Senior Vice President of the WUPJ and a member of the WUPJ Management Committee from 2001-2004. In 2000, Tanenbaum was the recipient of the WUPJ’s highest honor, the International Humanitarian Award. Since 1988, he has been a member of the Executive and the International Assembly of the WUPJ, receiving Honorary Life membership.
Tanenbaum has worked closely on WUPJ’s Shomrei Torah program. The program, which began in 1984, was created with the goal of requesting that congregations with many Sefrei Torah send one to a congregation in need, sharing the gift of Judaism. The program has since provided Sefrei Torah to over 100 congregations around the world. Rabbi Ellenson states, "The Shomrei Torah program that Jerry Tanenbaum initiated is genuinely a wonderful service he has performed for our people through the World Union."
Tanenbaum has served as Chairman of ARZA/WUNA, the North American Board/World Union for Progressive Judaism, Hot Springs Documentary Film Institute, Youth Committee Union of American Hebrew Congregations, Small Congregations Committee Union of American Hebrew Congregations, and Henry S. Jacobs Camp Committee.
Tanenbaum graduated from Tulane University in New Orleans, LA, with a BBA degree in Economics.
