Rabbi David Ellenson, President of Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, will award Rabbi Stephen Hart with the Doctor of Divinity at Graduation Ceremonies in Cincinnati on Thursday, May 19, 2011 at 7:30 pm at Isaac M. Wise Temple (8329 Ridge Road). Rabbi Hart will be honored for 25 years of scholarly distinction as an alumnus of HUC-JIR.
Born and raised on Chicago's south side, Rabbi Hart attended Chicago Sinai Congregation, then located in Hyde Park. Rabbi Hart's road to the rabbinate began with his graduation from Spertus College of Judaica in 1981 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Judaic Studies. Upon his rabbinic ordination in 1986, Rabbi Hart has been proud to serve two congregations in the Chicago area: Assistant and Associate Rabbi from 198601993 at North Shore Congregation Israel in Glencoe and for the past 18 years the Senior Rabbi of Temple Chai in Long Grove.
His rabbinate has been shaped and molded by a passion for outreach and nurturing the Jewish journey of each member of his congregation. In addition to his commitment over the past 25 years to the transformative power of Jewish camping at Olin-Sang-Ruby in Oconomowoc, WI, Rabbi Hart takes special pride in the establishment in his congregation of an innovative and dynamic initiative, The Chai Center for Enrichment and Renewal, which provides resources, programs, and support to enhance people's lives and promote healing mind, body, and spirit within the caring environment of the synagogue.
